As of April 7, 2025, the European Union has expressed its willingness to negotiate a “zero-for-zero” tariff arrangement with the United States. This proposal involves both sides eliminating tariffs on industrial goods, reflecting a desire to de-escalate trade tensions and foster a more cooperative economic relationship. The EU’s stance comes in the context of recent U.S. tariff policies, including a 20% tariff on EU goods announced as part of President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” initiative. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has emphasized that while the EU is “always ready for a good deal,” it is also preparing countermeasures to protect its interests if negotiations do not succeed. This dual approach highlights the EU’s readiness to engage constructively while safeguarding its economic position amid ongoing trade discussions.
