EU HAS PAUSED COUNTER TARIFFS AGAINST USA FOR 90 DAYS

The European Union has paused its counter-tariffs against the United States for 90 days. This decision, announced on April 10, 2025, by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, aligns with a 90-day pause on higher U.S. tariffs initiated by President Donald Trump. The EU’s move is intended to provide a window for negotiations with the U.S. to address ongoing trade disputes. During this period, the previously planned countermeasures, which were set to target approximately €20.9 billion ($23 billion) worth of U.S. goods starting April 15, will be held in abeyance.

Von der Leyen emphasized that the EU aims to “give negotiations a chance,” but warned that if talks do not yield satisfactory results, the countermeasures will be implemented. This pause reflects a mutual de-escalation effort following a tumultuous week of tariff announcements and market volatility, though the baseline 10% U.S. tariff on EU goods remains in place, as does the heightened 125% tariff on Chinese imports.
